Best Book Reads of 2012

During 2012, I started something new to me … I began tracking all of my reading on “goodreads.com” and I TRIED to discipline myself to write a review (or at least jot down a few words) on each book I read.  (Goodreads is basically a social networking site for Book Nerds like me, with the added benefit of book reviews, author blogs and reader commentaries thrown into the mix.)  Now, let me be really clear … this is all my “guilty pleasure” reading.  You will find no biographies or social commentaries or business books here.  No, these are mainly Young Adult books, most with a supernatural or “paranormal” element to them.  I’ve been onto that reading track for a while now, and I am still enjoying it.  I think some of the best new fiction work is coming from Young Adult authors.  And yes, there is a lot of drivel there, too, but that is one reason I have enjoyed “Goodreads” so much.  It didn’t take long to find other readers with my same interests, and we compare notes and recommend reads and “don’t-reads” and it’s nice to have someone to talk to about my latest book obsessions.  :-)
So … Goodreads says I read 66 books in 2012.  I think that will go to 67 or 68 by the actual end of the year, as I am off work and we are in the midst of our second snow-storm this week.  (The weather has put a damper on our plans to visit some folks, but makes for GREAT reading prospects.)  But let’s go with the 66 for now … that works out to just over one and a quarter books per week.  44 of those were audiobooks, 20 were on my Kindle and 2 were, well, actual ink and paper books.  For the most part, I download audiobooks from “audible.com,” which has an iTunes interface, sync them to my iPod, and listen to them during my commute to and from work.  They make that drive go a whole lot better!
I couldn’t manage a “top 10” this year … I got it down to “top 15.”  It was also really hard to settle on any sort of order … I tend to be most excited about whatever I read last, and “best written” often does not equate to “best loved.”  Without further ado, here are my favorites read in 2012:

Top 5 (with links to either the Goodreads descriptions or my reviews, if I wrote one):

1)      Poison Princess by Kresley Cole:  Well, this one is just a love affair for me.  Maybe a fling, maybe a long-term romance, only time will tell.  It was not, by any stretch, the best written book I read this year.  But I loved it most.  Tarot cards.  Apocalypse.  Cajun boy with a rap sheet and a single-minded obsession with a girl.  Jackson wins my “Best Male Lead” award against some stunning competition.
2)      Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta:  Beautiful story, beautiful writing.  An epic quest about a boy becoming a man, his relationship with his father, the kingdom they are fighting to restore, and a girl.  :-)  (Always, a girl.)
3)      City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare:  If you have read any of Clare’s books, then you know why this one is here.  She breaks my heart, every single time, and is one of the best writers publishing in Young Adult fiction today.  This is Book 5 of 6 in her "Mortal Instruments" series.  I’m not sure I will live through reading #6 when it is released.  Book 1 (“City of Bones”) is scheduled to come out next August as a movie.
4)      Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor:  This book got a lot of press this year for its lyrical writing, and it was well-deserved.  Every word of this book was lovingly selected, every line crafted for maximum effect.  This is a story that engages all of the senses, and the writing projects every scene in vivid color.  A fantastic tale of family, of love in the midst of war, with beautiful Prague as one of the backdrops.
5)      Grave Mercy by R.L. LaFevers:  Two words:  Assassin.  Nuns.  Honestly, best historical read in years.  High action.  Lots of poison.  :-)  WAR!!!  A kingdom to save, plots to unravel, people to kill.  And Death starring as “Dad.”  Loved it!

The Best of the Rest (in no real order):

1)      Hallowed by Cynthia Hand:  Love this series.  Hand is a college professor, and her writing is beautiful yet so smart, and the important bits keep sneaking up on me.  She has written a fabulous love triangle in the midst of an amazing story, and I sure can’t choose the winner.  “Hallowed” is Book 2 of a trilogy … Book 3 is out in January 2013, and is at the top of my “I want it NOW” list.
2)      Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare:  From Clare’s “The Infernal Devices,” which is the “prequel” series to “The Mortal Instruments,” which includes all of the “City” books (see the list above.)  TID is set in 19th century London, and Jem and Will are “Best Bromance” winners.  Bring tissues for this one.  Book 2 of 3.  Pretty sure I won’t live through the angst in Book #3.
3)      The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins:  You saw the movie.  Enough said!
4)      Third Grave Dead Ahead and Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones:  Ok, I cheated and snuck two in here, but hey, it’s a series.  Read them both.  Laugh out loud and don’t mind people looking at you funny.  Laugh right up until you suck in a breath and realize that the rubber just got introduced to the road.  These audiobooks are fabulously narrated.
5)      Pure and Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout:  Again with the two, I know.  But have you READ Armentrout?  She has a couple of very popular series going, and she is really making a name for herself in the YA genre.  I like all of her writing, but the “Covenant” Series (these are books #2 and #3) has really captivated me.  GREAT mythology (gods and demi-gods and whatnot), beautifully drawn characters, awesome plot tension.  I can’t wait to see how this series ends … two books to go.
6)      The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead:  Mead is largely responsible for my YA reading habit.  Read “The Vampire Academy” series (6 books) and then read the “Bloodlines” series (of which this is book 2.)  And then we’ll talk.  :-)  I didn't think she could do a worthy follow-up to the VA series, but she is blowing me away with the "Bloodlines" books.  Sydney has earned her spot.
7)      Rift by Andrea Cremer:  More with the historical setting and the war and the REALLY EVIL MAN.  I was not happy with the way Cremer’s oh-so-promising “Nightshade” series ended, but she redeemed herself here.  Book one of a series … book two will be out early in 2013.
8)      Starling by Lesley Livingston:  This book was a fabulous surprise.  Norse mythology.  Set in an elite private school in modern-day New York City.  With sword fights.  I’m dying to read the next book!
9)      Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris:  Also a fabulous surprise.  Did you ever watch the old television show “Roswell”?  Well, this is a cross between that, “X-Files” and “24.”  The author did a great job of maintaining the narrative tension, and the plot twists in this were awesome.
10)   Angel Fire by L.A. Weatherly:  This series hasn’t gotten nearly enough notice, in my humble opinion.   I loved Book #1 (“Angel Burn”) and Book #2 was an awesome follow-up.  Make with the mayhem!  Bring on the (gorgeous, sweet, devoted) half-angel boy!  As with the first book, this is a wild ride right to the end.  I can’t wait to see how Weatherly wraps it all up in Book #3 (out late in 2013.)

So, if you’ve held on this long, that’s my list.  Have you read any of these?  I would LOVE to talk about them!  :-)  And one of my favorite things in the world is to set up a day of scrapbooking while listening to a great audiobook.  That’s my idea of a first-class vacation!  I hope your 2013 is truly blessed and filled with all of the things you love most!

More fun in "Wonderland"

These layouts were part of my project in Tennessee, and use CTMH's "Wonderland" paper pack.  The bottom layout also uses the Wonderland My Stickease Assortment.  I love those snowflakes!

The top layout is the "alternate" pattern from the Wonderland Workshop on the Go (WOTG) kit.  In the top corner of the left page, there are Foundry Pin Clips (Z1612), and the round ends are inset with Clear Sparkles (Z1104).  I love the "mug" stamps, which are part of the WOTG kit.  They make me want a cup of hot chocolate!

Winter Wonderland!

These two layouts use the "Wonderland" paper pack from Close to My Heart's Autumn/Winter 2011 Idea Book.  The top layout is modeled off of art pictured on pg. 58 of the idea book (the pattern is called "Powerful Trio" from the how-to book "Imagine.")  The original pattern only had three pictures on the right page, and I added a second row.

In the bottom layout, I used CTMH's Cricut cartridge, "Art Philosophy," to cut out the letters.  I blinged them up a bit using our "Bitty Sparkles" (Z1263).  The chocolate color almost makes winter look warm!

More "Believe"ing

These two layouts also use the "Believe" paper pack, and the patterns are from the Believe "Workshop on the Go" (WOTG) kit.  The layouts use the Mini-Medley Accents Olive Collection (Z1489) and the Dimensional Elements Stars (Z1680).  I used our Watercolor Pencils (3505) to color the stamped images.  The stamp set came with the WOTG kit.  I really love the way these turned out!

I Believe!

While we were in Tennessee, I was working on Christmas layouts.  These use the "Believe" paper pack from Close to My Heart's Autumn/Winter 2011 Idea Book.  They are very fun, even a bit whimsical.  The blue felt pocket on the top right page is called a "Holiday Pocket," and the card insert has room for hidden journaling.

Scrappin' Sisters!

The girls and I were in Knoxville, TN for a crop on March 29-April 1, and we had such a good time.  We also debuted our new t-shirts!  (Thanks girls!)  The front says "Scrappin' Sisters" and has our name, and the back is pictured above.  LOVE these (and you will note that my shirt matches my pants!)

My Last "Cruise" of the Day ...

(See the two "Cruisin'" posts below ...)

The first two layouts that I made with the Cruisin' paper packet were from the Workshops on the Go Cruisin' Kit (G1039). I love the Bottle Caps (Z1691)! Very fun! The stamped images are made using the stamp set in the WOTG kit.

Layout 1:

This layout is from the WOTG instructional brochure.

Layout 2:

This layout is from CTMH's how-to book, "Magic." It is called "Enchantment," on pg. 78.

This is a beautiful paper packet! I really love it. These layouts are going in my 3-year old nephew's scrapbook. Layout 1 will hold pictures from a car show, and Layout 2 will hold pictures of my nephew and his daddy playing with their toys cars. :-)

Still Cruisin' Along ...

(See the Cruisin' post below ...)

Continuing our "cruise" through this paper packet:

Layout 3:

Layout 3 uses two layouts from "Reflections." The left page layout is called "Main Frame - Offset" on pg. 57, based on a CTMH layout on pg. 59 of the Spring/Summer 2012 Idea Book. The white mat in the lower right-hand corner will hold a square picture with rounded corners, to look like a Polaroid. I think that will be very cool. :~) The right page is called "Quartet - Sliding" on pg. 115 of "Reflections."

In addition to the "Cruisin'" paper packet, I used our My Acrylix stamp set, "Born to Ride," (C1483). The string on the bottom of the white cardstock is from CTMH's new Baker's Twine Neutral Assortment (Z1701), in the Grey Wool color.

Layout 4:

Layout 4 also uses two "Reflections" layouts. The left page layout is called "Title Topper - Center Focus" on pg. 19. The right page layout is called "Bottom Border - Triple Combination" on pg. 33. Again, I used the "Born to Ride" stamp set (love the "Born to Ride" and "Feel the Wind" on the left page!) I mounted the cut out images on our 3-D Foam Tape (Z1151). The brads are Cranberry bitty brads.

These layouts are going in my nephew's scrapbook, and both will have pictures of him riding with his grandfather on the Harley. :-)

Cruisin' through layouts!

Last weekend, I attended my upline Tonya's awesome Shamrock Crop. I spent most of the weekend working with Close to My Heart's new "Cruisin'" paper packet from the Spring/Summer 2012 Idea Book. I was really happy with the results! My friend John H. asked me to post my layouts, and so here they are, in reverse order:

Layout 5:

Layout 5 uses two layouts from CTMH's how-to book, "Reflections." The left page layout is called "Bottom Border - Overlap," on p. 34. It was based on a design on pg. 112 of the Spring/Summer 2012 Idea Book. The right page layout is called "Sampler - Nine-Photo Quilt," on pg. 122. I used the Cruisin' Paper Packet (X7154B), the Cruisin' Complements Silver Foil Images (X7154C), the Irresistibles Persnickety Journaling Spots (Z1734), and I cut the scalloped circle with the 2" Scallop Circle Punch (Z1392).

Layout 6:

Layout 6 isn't blinged up yet. I used a layout called "Subtitles" from pg. 94 of CTMH's how-to book, "Imagine." That red cardstock is in our Cranberry shade.

Superhero!

Oh, I love this paper! :-) It is from our new Idea Book that went live 2/1/2012, and it is called, well ... "Superhero" (X7152B). This layout uses some other fun things ... the coordinating My Acrylix stamp set called "Super Powers" (C1485) and My Reflections rub-on complements (X7152C), our new Baker's Twine (neutral assortment, Z1701) and Irresistibles Persnickety Journaling Spots (Z1734). LOTS of fun ... I'm using this for my nephew's 3rd birthday party pictures. The theme of his party was "Super Friends" and this couldn't be more perfect!

Best Books I Read in 2011

When I'm not scrapping, I'm reading. And my DARLING hubby got me a Kindle Fire for Christmas!! Oh, there are 1,000,001 reasons why I love that man, and he just added one more to the list! LOOOOVVVVEEE the Kindle. So, to add to my Audible.com obsession, I'm now haunting Amazon's Kindle library too. Between reading and scrapping ... I want to retire and focus on those things full time, and I spend so much money on those hobbies, there is no way I can stop earning a paycheck! LOL Life's little ironies, indeed.

I love stories, and reading was my first mode of travel. I would lay on a tree branch, back home on the farm, hiding up in the leaves from chores and Mama, and get transported to magical, far-away places by one book after another. I still do that ... the hiding from the chores to read part, at least! So I thought I'd share some of my favorites from 2011, not necessarily in order:

1) The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead: I've been on a "Young Adult" reading glut, and this was the series that kicked it off. I read all six books this year, plus the first one in the new spin-off series. Yep, vampires, but they don't sparkle - they are BADA**. Dimitri Belikov ... OH. MY. STARS. I spent months obsessing about a fictional guy half my age. Just call me cougar. :-)

2) The Mortal Instruments series and its prequel series, The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare: Demon hunters, vampires, werewolves, nephilim, yeah baby! TMI is set in modern day New York, TID is set in Victorian London. Clare is an awesome writer, and these two series are definitely among the best in YA lit today.

3) The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa: Okay, yes, I read about faeries too. :-) And this concept was so fresh, and the characters so beautifully drawn. I was totally Team Puck by the way. Read and discuss.

4) Nightshade and Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer: And the final book in the trilogy, "Bloodrose" is out TOMORROW!!!!! Guess what I'll be doing then? :-) More wolves, but this was some of the most INTENSE writing of the year. I can't wait to see how this finishes up. Hot alpha-wolf love triangle in this one - WOOF!

5) Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini: This book was so unique to me ... basically a modern-day retelling of Helen of Troy, set on Nantucket. How can you NOT want to read that? Loved the setting, the story was fantastic, and the writing was excellent. Highly recommend this one.

6) Angel Burn by L. A. Weatherly: Angels among us! Not nice ones, either. The real "capture" in this book was the hero ... well, yes, I *do* have a soft-spot for bad boys! Alex was all kinds of awesome, and the sequel to this is out January 24th. You've got time to read the first one before then ... go on, you know you want to.

7) Die for Me by Amy Plum: Zombies in Paris! LOL Who knew they could be this romantic? Seriously - this was a great read, and showed off Paris at its best. Vincent, the hero in this story, is a date that every guy ought to be measured against ... COURTED the girl. WOOED her. WOWED her. Yep, he was the most romantic out of this lot of stories, and every girl deserves that at least once in her life!

8) Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon: And now we are in Ireland. I don't know how to classify this one ... Fae? Druids? Elementals? Anyhow ... loved it, loved the setting, and I got it on Audible, so I got to listen to the lilting Irish brogue for hours of great story-telling.

9) Unearthly by Cynthia Hand: This one might be my favorite read of the year. I listened to it on Audible, and then got it on the Kindle, so I could read the words for myself. Angels again, and another great setting: Jackson Hole, WY. But the best part of this whole thing was Tucker. Tucker rocks. Tucker skies. Tucker rodeos. Tucker fishes. Tucker is the best fictional guy I met all year. So if Clara chooses Christian (in the sequel, "Hallowed", out on January 17) I will never speak to her again.

10) A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies: More good and bad angels, and a cliff-hanger ending. I am officially Team Asher.

11) Half-Blood and Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout: These are the first books in two different series by this author. Half-Blood is set in a "supernatural" academy, a lot like #1 above, and was a great read. Obsidian ... has aliens! :-) Yep, aliens. I didn't see that one coming. Both really good reads, and I'm looking forward to the sequels.

12) Eternal Starling by Angela Corbett: Soul-mates, reincarnation, destiny, hot guys in great cars in love with this ONE girl. The action is mostly in Colorado, and the author makes full use of the great setting. I can't choose between the guys in this one ... best love triangle of the year!

13) Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent: Bean sidhes (or as we would say, banshees). My first banshees series, too! The family dynamics in this series are excellent, and I do love the Hudson brothers! Team Tod, all the way.

14) (ADULT) Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward: So, I didn't *just* read Young Adult stuff in 2011, (but mostly did.) I'm going to read every book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, at least until I get my Qhuinn/Blaylock story. And daggone, I wish she would hurry up with that one. This was an okay offering in a great series, but I'm just riding along til I get Qhuay!

15) (ADULT) 2nd Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones: I loved the first book in this series ... "First Grave on the Right." About the girl who is the Grim Reaper - great concept, huh? So I was "dying" for the second one to come out ... the author didn't even need to tie up the loose ends, just keep stringing me along ... and I was a disappointed. 2nd Grave was good, and yes, I got strung out a bit more, but it was SHORT. If you are going to wait months between books, well, darn it, give me enough to tide me over til the next one. This one didn't. The 3rd one is out at the end of January, and I'll give it one more shot. I really do want to know what happens next.

So there are a few of the really good reads from 2011 ... and since I'm going through 2-3 books a week, please understand how hard it is to cull my list! :-) If you are reading something awesome (especially in the paranormal romance genre), well, tell me all about it!

Happy 2012!

Happy New Year! I'm about to kick back into scrapbooking mode. I have *FIVE* scrapbooking trips lined up for 2012!! I'm so excited!! They are:

1) Charlottesville, VA in January, with the local Creative Memories consultants. Hey, I sell for CTMH, and I LOVE CTMH, but my first "adult" foray into scrapbooking was with CM, and I still credit them with reigniting my passion for the craft. And they still make the best adhesives in the business, IMHO. The CM ladies in the Charlottesville area put on a great retreat, and we always have a blast with them.

2) Pensacola, FL in February, for a regional CTMH celebration. I can't wait for this one! JD is going with me to get in a little golfing. We are going to drive down and give the Garmin (named "Baby G" by my hubby) an outing. Should be awesome, and a lot of the "Scattered Hearts" team will be there.

3) Luray, VA in mid-March, for Tonya's "Shamrock Crop." My guurrlllsss!! And the other John H (Janice's, not mine), and probably Tonya's dad, and maybe Jay. Our guys who love and enable our habit! LOL

4) Knoxville, TN in late March for a "Scrapbook Dream Vacation" with the sisters! Ah, back to Tennessee. SDV didn't have this one last year, and I missed it. New location, so I'm dying to check it out. 4 days of no sleep and non-stop fun!

5) Dallas, TX in July 2012 for the CTMH 2012 Convention. Big D!!!!! I've really loved the last two conventions, and so I expect this one to be great as well. And we get grabby hands on the new product for the 2nd half of 2012 ... so much to look forward to!

So, that's the scrapbooking plan so far in 2012. First up is Ryan's 2011 album, which is in various states of completion. And Joel's rock-n-roll Hall of Fame album. And our Hawaii album from 2009. And our Australia album from 2007. Um, I have a lot to do. :-) And it looks like I'll need a plan for the 2nd half of the year. What are your plans? Make it with Scrappin' Joy!!

Merry Christmas!

I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! From our house to yours ... warmest greetings of the season!

"Bliss"fully Satisfied

So, I have a confession to make ... when Close to My Heart's new Idea Book came out and I got all of my new paper packs, I didn't like "Bliss." I tried to like it; I used it once or twice to see if that made me like it better; I still didn't like Bliss. Well, for our Sassy Crop next weekend, Tonya (my upline) asked if I would bring some Bliss artwork to share. So, I set myself a goal to make a "Bliss" layout that I LOVED. Not liked. LOVED.

And I think I have succeeded! I actually wound up making two layouts, one dedicated to my mother, and one to my father. When I sat down to work with the papers, I finally pinpointed the problem I was having. Bliss has all neutral colors, and unless I am doing a wedding album, or a heritage album (which are both pretty specialized projects and not part of my regular scrapping repertoire), my layouts are usually focused around a more vibrant color. Then, I realized that all of that "neutral" gives me the perfect opportunity to highlight any color I choose! So, for my mother's layout, I emphasized the chocolate in the Bliss palette. For my father's layout, I added a couple of sheets of "New England Ivy" green cardstock. I was thrilled with the results! What do you think? Do you like it? Let me know!
